For many people, it is their first time searching for a wedding DJ. The task can be overwhelming, and there are many different DJ styles in the industry. What you want is a DJ that will make the night run smoothly, make announcements, MC, and play the music that your guests will dance to. We recommend asking these questions to help you get the DJ you want.


Have Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ

 

Basic Questions

It is important to know if your DJ has the track record to take on an event as big as your wedding. 

  1. Is my wedding date available?

  2. How many years have you been DJing weddings?

  3. How many weddings do you do per month?

  4. What is your price? Do you charge for overtime?

  5. Is the price all-inclusive? Are there any other costs besides what's included in your price (travel, setup, etc)?

  6. Are you insured?


Venue-Specific Questions

How familiar the DJ is with the type of venue will determine how the night will function. 

  1. Have you been to our venue or DJ’d at a similar venue?

  2. Our ceremony and reception are in separate locations, can you do that?

  3. What is the process/timeframe of moving equipment from the ceremony to reception?

 

Equipment-Specific Questions

Not all equipment is made equally. The quality and reliability of the DJs equipment have an effect on your evening and how much your guests will enjoy themselves. 

  1. What equipment would you recommend for our venue?

  2. How long does your setup take?

  3. Do you provide a wireless microphone and/or a wireless lapel microphone?

  4. Does your sound system have a subwoofer?

  5. Do you provide your own table and linen for the ceremony and reception?

  6. What does your dance lighting look like and should we have it at our venue?

  7. What volume do you normally play your music at? (Some venues have a volume cap)

  8. If the ceremony does not have easy access to a power outlet, can you provide a generator?


DJ-Specific Questions

The DJ has the biggest impact on the success of your night. Their style and vibe are important to the flow of your night. 

  1. Do you make announcements? How much should we expect the DJ to be on the microphone?

  2. What is your DJing style? Do you play songs with quick transitions or let the entire song play?

  3. Do you MC? What is your MCing style?

  4. Does the DJ take breaks? How many and for how long?

  5. What does the DJ do to make sure that all of the guests feel respected?

  6. Do you coordinate with the other vendors (event coordinator, photographer, caterer, etc)?

  7. Do you take song requests from our guests?

  8. What do you wear at the wedding?

  9. Do you want food provided by us?

Music Questions

Let’s face it, the music for your night is super important and you need to find out if your DJ will get it just right. 

  1. How do we select the songs for our wedding?

  2. If we don’t want to request a lot of songs, do you have a pre-defined playlist or do you read the crowd and play songs that you think our guests will dance to?

  3. Can we provide our own songs from Spotify, YouTube, email, etc?


Logistical Questions

These questions are important to understand what the backend process looks like. 

  1. Can we schedule meetings with the DJ prior to the wedding?

  2. How many hours before the start time do you arrive?

  3. Do you have a contract?

  4. Do you require a deposit?

  5. Do you charge for additional hours?

  6. Do you charge for travel and set up time?

  7. What happens if we want to change anything (number of hours, services provided, equipment add-ons, etc)?

 

Less Common Questions

These are questions that may not apply to every wedding, but if they do, they are important!!!

  1. If it’s an outside wedding, what is your process if it rains?

  2. If we don’t think our guests will dance and want to entertain them, do you have any games that the DJ can host with our guests?
